Veruca Salt

Eight Arms to Hold You    Born Entertainer   Blow It out Your Ass It's Veruca Salt [Vinyl]
Named after Veruca Salt, the spoiled rich girl from the children's book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, Veruca Salt was formed in Chicago by Louise Post (guitar/vocals) and Nina Gordon (guitar/vocals). Post and Gordon were introduced through mutual friend and actress Lili Taylor, and began playing music together. They wrote songs for a year and a half before being joined by Gordon's brother, Jim Shapiro, on drums and Steve Lack on bass guitar.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is perhaps better known as "Willy Wonka."  Roald Dahl is the author of many popular children's books including Fantastic Mr Fox, Boy, Danny the Champion of the World, James and the Giant Peach (Puffin Modern Classics), Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, The "Witches": Plays for Children and The Bfg.

The Velvet Underground

The Velvet Underground & Nico   The Velvet Underground   The Very Best of the Velvet Underground

THE VELVET UNDERGROUND was a 1960's experimental band associated with pop artist Andy Warhol. Their name came from a paperback book they found on the street. The book was about sex in America and just hit them as sounding right.

This New York group was the most seminal band in alternative rock music. Their first album, The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967), is now widely considered to be one of the most important albums in the history of rock music.

The Velvet Underground were managed by renowned pop-artist Andy Warhol, who designed the now-iconic 'peeling banana' cover for the album, and insisted his German model protégé Nico was to sing on three songs. Her unique, deep voice and Lou Reed's deadpan vocals discussed taboo themes over John Cale's droning viola and deliberately detuned guitars, for a distinctive sound that pre-empted various strands of alternative rock by at least a decade.
