Duran Duran

Rio   The Essential Collection  Seven and the Ragged Tiger

Duran Duran is an English rock band that was one of the most successful bands of the 1980s at the forefront of the MTV-driven "Second British Invasion" of the U.S. music scene. (The first "invasion" being from the 1960s led by the Beatles, Rolling Stones, et al.)

They have had 14 singles in the Top 10 of the UK Singles Chart and 21 in the Billboard Hot 100 with sales of more than 100 million records.

Powered by their music videos and fashion designers that built an image of  "the prettiest boys in rock," their videos were controversial and included partial nudity and suggestive. the slick videos were done by professional directors on 35mm film giving them more of a polished film look than other cheap videos.

The band was created by Nick Rhodes, John Taylor and Stephen Duffy, with the later addition of Roger Taylor and, after numerous personnel changes, Andy Taylor, and Simon Le Bon. Taylor and Rhodes formed the band in 1978 when the Birmingham club scene included bands such as The Sex Pistols and The Clash.

Barbarella: Queen of the Galaxy

A hot club venue there was called "Barbarella's" named after the Roger Vadim French science-fiction film Barbarella starring Jane Fonda in the title role. Rhodes and Taylor decided to use the name of the film's villain, Dr. Durand Durand, as their band's name.
