While still in high school in Ukiah, California, Davey Havok (vocals), Mark Stopholese (guitar) and Vic Chalker (bass) formed an outfit called AFI in 1991 which was supposedly a abbreviation of the full band name A Fire Inside.

Band members have also stated that the name was taken from the titles Asking for It.

Alice in Chains

      

 No definitive explanation of the band's origin has been found. One story is that it is a play on Alice in Wonderland. Another funny, but unlikely, story is that Alice In Chains was named after a lost episode from The Brady Bunch series.

It is said that one of the AC/DC band members saw that on an appliance and thought it had something to do with power. (It does mean "alternating current / direct current".) The band used it, not realizing it was also slang for a bisexual- the band claims NOT to be bisexual.
